Spain Rejects Military Solution, Urges Immediate Middle East De-escalation

(MENAFN) Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares flatly ruled out any military path to peace in the Middle East on Monday, issuing a sharp condemnation of the collapsed ceasefire between Israel and Iran as the region lurched toward deeper conflict.

Taking to X, the US social media platform, Albares made his government's position unequivocal: "I condemn the breakdown of the ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Resorting once again to violence will only bring more suffering."

The top Spanish diplomat pressed for an immediate return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable route to lasting regional stability, demanding swift de-escalation from all parties involved.

"There is no military solution in the Middle East," Albares added.

He went further, calling on all parties across Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon to honor existing ceasefire commitments and step back from the brink.

The remarks came as the region absorbed the shockwaves of a dramatic overnight escalation. Iran launched missiles toward northern Israel late Sunday — its first such strike since a fragile ceasefire took hold in early April — following Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs.

The current cycle of hostilities traces back to late February, when the US and Israel conducted coordinated airstrikes on Iran, triggering a cascade of Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel and regional nations hosting American military assets. A temporary ceasefire reached on April 8 briefly halted the violence, but subsequently unraveled amid bitter disputes over its implementation and compounding regional developments.
