Spain Slams Trump’s Threat to Impose Blockade on Hormuz

(MENAFN) Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles pulled no punches Monday, denouncing U.S. President Donald Trump's naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as "senseless" and warning it represents a dangerous acceleration of an already devastating regional crisis.

Speaking in an interview with a Spanish national broadcaster, Robles cautioned that the blockade would mark "another step" in an escalating confrontation that has already exacted a heavy toll in both human lives and economic stability.

The Defense Minister did not mince words on the broader conflict, branding the ongoing war between the United States, Israel, and Iran as "absurd," and pointedly noting that no one can account for why it started in the first place.

"This is a situation that is affecting not only Iran, but also Lebanon and other countries in the region," she said.

Robles reaffirmed Spain's firm opposition to illegal wars, rejection of human rights violations, and commitment to diplomatic resolution — issuing an urgent call for immediate de-escalation. She also expressed "deep concern" over the collapse of diplomatic momentum, insisting that "any conflict must be resolved through diplomatic channels," even in the face of mounting obstacles.

The Minister further emphasized that respect for international law is "essential and fundamental," delivering a direct rebuke to both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — asserting that neither leader holds the authority to override the rules governing the international community.
