Widespread wildfires make Spanish PM declare civil protection emergency
Sanchez made the declaration during a visit to a firefighting command post in Caceres, in southwest Spain, one of the regions hardest hit along with northwestern Galicia and Castilla-Leon.
Describing the situation as “a calamity,” Sanchez pledged government support, including compensation for those who have suffered losses due to the fires.
According to reports, over 382,000 hectares have burned across Spain in 2025, with more than 300,000 hectares destroyed in just the past two weeks. Regional emergency services confirmed that four people have died this month and over 30,000 residents have been evacuated.
Sanchez emphasized that climate change is the underlying cause of the crisis and highlighted the importance of confronting it to prevent future disasters.
