Liverpool soccer player passes away in car crash
The fatal accident occurred on July 3 near Palacios de Sanabria in Spain’s Zamora province. Emergency services reported that the vehicle veered off the A-52 motorway and caught fire.
Jota had recently married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, just two weeks earlier. The couple had three children together. His final Instagram post featured wedding photos with the caption “Yes to forever.”
Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proenca described Jota as not only a remarkable footballer, with nearly 50 caps for the national team, but also “an extraordinary person” respected on and off the pitch. He called the brothers’ deaths a significant loss for Portuguese football.
Cristiano Ronaldo also mourned Jota’s passing, saying, “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team… I send my condolences to your family, wife, and children.”
The FPF has asked for a minute of silence before Portugal’s upcoming women’s Euro match against Spain.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro called the news "unexpected and tragic," offering heartfelt condolences to the family.
Jota began his career at Pacos de Ferreira in 2014 before joining Atletico Madrid, later going on loan to FC Porto. His breakthrough in England came with Wolverhampton Wanderers, helping them rise to the Premier League. He signed with Liverpool in 2020, making 182 appearances and scoring 65 goals, contributing to the club’s Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup victories.
Internationally, he played 49 games for Portugal, scoring 14 goals, and was part of the UEFA Nations League-winning teams in 2019 and 2025. His brother Andre played for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
